GOE-DEEP Drilling Project - Sampling Party in Trondheim, Norway

The GOE-DEEP project is busy taking samples

From 05 - 28 October a team of international scientists meets in Trondheim, Norway, to take samples from 8 holes drilled in 2025. During the first week about 2000 samples are already taken.

GOE-DEEP aims to significantly increase our understanding of Paleoproterozoic Earth history by drilling up to 11 boreholes in the Franceville Basin of Gabon, likely the best-preserved archive of Paleoproterozoic sedimentary rocks globally. It is during this critical time in Earth history that the oxygenation of the atmosphere and upper layers of the oceans and evolution of aerobic microbial ecosystems take place.
