...operational support group and location

The Operational Support Group as part of the International Continental Scientific Drilling Program ICDP is based at the GFZ Section 4.2 - Geomechanics and Scientific Drilling at the Helmholtz Centre Potsdam - GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences in Potdsam, Germany.

The International Continental Scientific Drilling Program has played a primary role over the past two decades, uncovering geological secrets from beneath our continents through targeted scientific drilling. As a non-profit organization for modern Earth science research it has enabled first-class science to be pursued, numerous targets to be probed and hypotheses to be tested, with the result that fundamental discoveries about ‘System Earth’ have been made. Networking with other science programs has been strengthened ever since, and bridges with the private and government sector built.

Road construction is underway almost everywhere in Potsdam.

From Berlin drive in direction Hannover/Leipzig on the Autobahn A115, take exit 6 Potsdam-Babelsberg. Follow the signs to Zentrum anddrive towards Potsdam Hauptbahnhof (central station). There, across the wide intersection direction Beelitz/Caputh, take the street Am Brauhausberg and turn left immediately into Albert-Einstein-Straße. Drive uphill until you reach the gate of the GFZ campus at the end of the paved road.

From Hannover or Leipzig on Autobahn A110/E30 (southern Berliner Ring), take exit Potsdam-Süd/Michendorf and take direction Potsdam on the B2 (northbound) into Potsdam. Turn right into Am Brauhausberg and later turn right in Albert-Einstein-Straße. Drive uphill until you reach the gate of the GFZ campus at the end of the paved road.

From Hamburg or Rostock on Autobahn A10/E55, take exit 25 (Potsdam Nord) and follow direction Potsdam along B273. In Potsdam follow the signs to Hauptbahnhof (central station). There, follow the signs direction Beelitz/Caputh. Cross the wide intersection and right after turn right at the large building on the right labelled blu (public swimming pool) onto the street Am Brauhausberg (sign Einstein-Park). Immediately turn left into Albert-Einstein-Straße. Drive uphill until you reach the gate of the GFZ campus at the end of the paved road.

At the gate of the Wissenschaftspark Albert Einstein campus, register your license plate number with the gate keeper's lodge. They will give you a GFZ CAMPUS MAP showing directions on the campus and specifically to us, building A69, and will then open the gate for you. Our office building 'A69' is located on the far southern end of the campus and you will find us on the top floor.

By Train

LAT./LONG.: 52.378467881394414, 13.065705299377443

From Berlin take the railway "RE 1" (direction Magdeburg) or take Berlin's city train called "S-Bahn" to Potsdam-Hauptbahnhof

For public transport inside Berlin and Potsdam get a ticket labeled Berlin ABC (3 zones, which is valid for the S-Bahn, trams and busses. It costs about 3.40 Euro and is valid for 90 minutes.

From your hotel inside Potsdam, take a tram or a bus to the Potsdam Hauptbahnhof (central station). Most buses and trams stop there. Inside Potsdam buy a ticket of price category "A" (short distance).

Once you arrive at the Potsdam Hauptbahnhof continue with By Foot or take the bus 691 directly to the Wissenschaftspark Albert Einstein. The bus departs outside the station building, south entrance.

Don't forget to stamp the ticket on the S-Bahn platform BEFORE you board a train, or inside bus and tram when starting your journey with these.

From BER Berlin Airport

LAT./LONG.: 52.378467881394414, 13.065705299377443

From Berlin's international airport BER there are several ways to get to Potsdam. Check the trip planner. Choose "From:  S Flughafen Berlin-Schönefeld Bhf", "To: S Potsdam Hauptbahnhof". For instance, take any S-Bahn in direction Berlin City Center. When crossing the "Ringbahn" (the Circular Line), change to any S-Bahn running clockwise (S46, S41), until station Schöneberg, there change to S1 for Wannsee, change there on the same platform to S7 for Potsdam-Hauptbahnhof. Alternatively, change from Ringbahn S41/S46 to S7 in Westkreuz. Alternatively, take a fast commuter train through Berlin (RE7, switch to S7 in Ostbahnhof), or travel around Berlin (RB 22). Durations are approximately equal.

Once you arrive at the Potsdam Hauptbahnhof continue By Foot.
