GOE-DEEP drilling project: Hole 8 already at 460 m depth

GOE-DEEP is excited to begin drilling our final hole of the 2025 drilling season! Since the drilling started on June 6, 2025, seven holes have been drilled successfully. The upcoming eighth hole, located in Lebaye, Gabon, will provide valuable stratigraphy of the Okondja Subbasin. This borehole will provide the rock record of the lower part of the sedimentary succession of the Okondja Subbasin and complement the middle part that we intersected in our hole in Ambinda. Combining the drilled records of the sedimentology of three Subbasins of the Franceville Basin will enhance our understanding of the oxygenation of the atmosphere and upper layers of the oceans, as well as the evolution of aerobic microbial ecosystems during the Paleoproterozoic.

Meanwhile, the planning for the transportation of the core boxes to their core repository at the Geological Survey of Norway is in full swing and will hopefully happen during the fall. At this facility, the cores will undergo further examination and be split before the first sampling party takes place.
