GOE-DEEP Drilling Project -has finished hole 5075_7_A

The GOE-DEEP project has finished hole 5075_7_A at a depth of 513.3 m

The ICDP project GOE-DEEP has finished the seventh borehole, 5075_07_A, in Ambinda just in time to celebrate Gabonese Independence Day on August 18! The crew completed drilling at a depth of 513.3 m after 200 core runs and filling 140 core boxes within 10 days. The teams will now move to site 5075_8 to start drilling the next borehole in the coming days.

GOE-DEEP aims to significantly increase our understanding of Paleoproterozoic Earth history by drilling up to 11 boreholes in the Franceville Basin of Gabon, likely the best-preserved archive of Paleoproterozoic sedimentary rocks globally. It is during this critical time in Earth history that the oxygenation of the atmosphere and upper layers of the oceans and evolution of aerobic microbial ecosystems take place.
