GOE-DEEP Drilling Project - Phase 1 completed

The GOE-DEEP project finished 8 holes, altogether recovering 2717 m of core

Congratulations to the team! 👍
After drilling to a depth of 459.6 meters at the final (8th) Lebaye hole, the GOE-DEEP drilling project has successfully completed Phase 1. With a core recovery of 96%, 2717 m of precious core came to the surface in only 3 months time.

GOE-DEEP aims to significantly increase our understanding of Paleoproterozoic Earth history by drilling up to 11 boreholes in the Franceville Basin of Gabon, likely the best-preserved archive of Paleoproterozoic sedimentary rocks globally. It is during this critical time in Earth history that the oxygenation of the atmosphere and upper layers of the oceans and evolution of aerobic microbial ecosystems take place.
