GOE-DEEP Drilling Project - core processing at NGU

The GOE-DEEP project is busy processing the cores at NGU

After the long journey from Gabon, the cores finally arrived safely at NGU in Norway. Now, the team around PI Aivo Lepland is busy curating the core for the sampling party. They split, photograph, XRF scan and relog every core section to obtain the best possible base for the selection of samples.

GOE-DEEP aims to significantly increase our understanding of Paleoproterozoic Earth history by drilling up to 11 boreholes in the Franceville Basin of Gabon, likely the best-preserved archive of Paleoproterozoic sedimentary rocks globally. It is during this critical time in Earth history that the oxygenation of the atmosphere and upper layers of the oceans and evolution of aerobic microbial ecosystems take place.
