Bushveld Drilling Project - Sampling Party!

From 18 - 21 August the BVDP project holds its Sampling Party at the CGS core repository in Donkerhoek, South Africa.

The BVDP sampling party started today with a meeting of about 30 Scientists at CGS headquarters in Pretoria, South Africa. About 30 participants from science and industry presented and discussed preliminary results of the BVDP project. They day concluded with a visit to the CGS core repository, where the complete 1877 m of precious BVDP core were laid out for inspection and sampling.

With on the order of 1 million km3 of igneous rocks, the Bushveld Complex constitutes a Large Igneous Province. How can such a vast volume be generated from the mantle? Unlike most Large Igneous Provinces, the Bushveld Complex is largely plutonic and represents the roots of such systems, it is bimodal in composition, with subequal proportions of mafic and felsic igneous rocks and contains a fabulous mineral wealth, with resources of strategic and high-tech metals.
