The first IDDP-ICDP spot core was retrieved today, Monday the 11th of April 2005 from well RN-19 at Reykjanes.

The first IDDP_ICDP spot core was retrieved at 6 o’clock this morning, april the 11th 2005, from the bottom section of well RN-19 at Reykjanes. The spot core was funded by the ICDP. Well RN-19 now reached a total depth of 2248m and is one of the many candidate wells for deepening during the IDDP at Reykjanes. The coring operation went well, until the core jammed completely after about 3m of coring. The reason for the core jamming was related to subvertical fractures, which were filled by actinolite. The drilled core is composed of a dolerite intrusion – which some geologists like to term diabase. The dolerite was relatively fresh in appearance, despite the secondary mineralised fractures that were observed. The fracture fills contained actinolite, which precipitates from hydrothermal fluids at temperatures around 300°C. For the time being the drilled core will be kept at the ISOR (Iceland GeoSurvey) core laboratory in Reykjavik. Please enjoy browsing through the photo documentation showing the spot coring operations.
