The third sampling party within the EGER project took place at the Geothermal Research Centre Ringen in Litomerice, CZ. About 20 international scientists came together to discuss the Bazina Liba borehole drilled in late 2021 and to take samples for further investigations.
Actual drill depth is 294 m delivering nice and solid granites. Prior to reaching the granites they drilled through a series of volcanites from a feeding channel facies.
Actual depth is 176 m in which the drillers met the border between basalt and granite (which was expected to be met in the well, but nobody knew how deep exactly).
EGER is drilling again! Last Friday the S4 Bazina Liba Borehole started coring in Czechia. After 46 m the borehole diameter was switched from 140 mm to PQ. Core recovery is very high bringing good quality cores to deck. On Wednesday evening a drill depth of 74 m was reached.
The sampling party for drill core samples from the 402 m deep Landwüst borehole S1 at the BGR Core Repository in Berlin-Spandau took place on 2 December. Core samples will be available after formal application, please contact Heiko Woith for details.
Final depth of 400 m was successfully reached this Sunday afternoon. On Monday and maybe also on Tuesday well logging will be performed and afterwards the well will be cased and cemented.
Drilling the deep part (40-300 m) of the Hartusov well has finally started! The first few cores arrived in a short time, keeping the geomicrobiology crew quite busy. Depth around 60 m at midnight.
Yesterday core lost, that means all pipes out, get the core, all pipes in again, 12 hours loss, so it is clear, before Ascension Day no 400m depth, then continue drilling on Monday, depth at the moment 365m
since Monday without QMS - must be repaired, today drill bit change, that means 330 m pipes (ca 115 pcs, 8.5 tons) remove and insert, this operation takes approx. 10 hours, "romantic" sunset
culture in the workplace, many vehicles, first mud extractor, then fresh water for flushing, degasser finally back in flushing and ..... many cores again
The drilling proceeds to a depth of 198 m on 9 May, back into solid rock. A meeting with colleagues from germany and czech republik was held today. Another borehole stabilization is in preparation.
We are drilling "Pampe", the geologist in charge said. Core material is constantly changing from solid phyllite to soft weathered clay layers and back. The actual depth is about 165m.
After the borehole stabilization, the drilling continued on 3 May 2019 down to 140 m. The problem of core loss seems to be overcome. But, still fractured rock...
This borehole will be used for installing a downhole broadband seismometer and vertical geophone chain. The wireline drilling of 95 mm diameter to 400m depth is cased by steel casing and cemented.
