Deep Chew Bahir Drilling Project: Getting to the bottom of the Quaternary

DeepCHB is an ICDP drilling project in the Chew Bahir basin in southern Ethiopia, part of the East African Rift region. Scientists will bore into the basin’s lake and river sediments to a depth of about 1,200 meters, reaching the base of the Quaternary, roughly 0.6 to 2.5 million years ago. The sediments provide a high-resolution record of past climates, ecosystems, and human activity, showing how rainfall, lakes, and habitats changed with climate over long times. Building on the earlier Hominin Sites and Paleolakes Drilling Project, DeepCHB seeks to push the record well beyond the previous ~300 meters drilled. By reconstructing how the climate and environment evolved—and how early humans and other life adapted—researchers hope to uncover links between tectonics, landscape change, and human origins in the region. The results will improve our understanding of past climate shifts and help inform predictions of future environmental change in the area.
