ICDP Early Career Researcher Workshop 2025
“Next Generation” - Vienna, 25–27 April 2025
The ICDP Early Career Researcher Workshop 2025 - Next Generation took place 25–27 April at the Austrian Academy of Sciences in Vienna, bringing together 26 Early Career Researchers (ECRs) from across ICDP member and partner countries.
This three-day event marked several milestone achievements for ICDP’s ECR community, including the formal launch of the ICDP Early Career Researcher Network. The network aims to enhance communication among early career scientists, support professional growth, and amplify the voice of ECRs within ICDP. Participants collaboratively defined a governance structure, establishing clear roles, responsibilities, and accountability mechanisms to ensure the network’s sustainability.
Key Outcomes:
Launch of the ICDP Mentorship Program
A major outcome of the workshop was the creation of a structured mentorship program. Senior ICDP scientists will guide ECRs in career development, research planning, grant writing, and integration into ICDP activities. The program is designed to create a supportive environment where knowledge and experience can be shared, accelerating the growth of future leaders in scientific drilling.
Formation of the ECR Task Force
The Task Force was formed as a transitional leadership group, guiding the initial development of the ECR Network and preparing the foundation for its long-term governance structure.
Highlights from the Workshop:
Keynote on Mentorship
Olivia Jecel, manager of the alma Mentoring Program at the University of Vienna, delivered an inspiring keynote address on the transformative power of mentorship. She highlighted how mentoring relationships enhance confidence, communication, skills, and access to professional networks—reinforcing the goals of the new ICDP mentorship initiative.
Mentor–Mentee Speed Dating
A fast-paced networking session on Saturday introduced mentors and mentees through a series of brief, one-on-one conversations. This dynamic format helped participants connect personally and laid the groundwork for formal mentorship pairings.
Establishment of ECR Governance and Representation
On the final day of the workshop, participants turned their attention to establishing a sustainable governance structure for the newly formed ECR Network. Discussions focused on decision-making processes, member responsibilities, and the core values of transparency and shared leadership. To kickstart the network’s development, an interim ECR Task Force was appointed to lead initial activities and lay the foundation for long-term leadership.
These efforts have set the stage for continued momentum beyond Vienna, ensuring the ongoing growth, visibility, and active engagement of early career researchers within the ICDP community.
