Workshop FlankEd:
Drilling the Deforming Eastern Flank of Mount Etna – FlankEd
WHEN 📆 24-27 September 2025 (Catania, Italy)
CALL ▶️ Drilling the Deforming Eastern Flank of Mount Etna

The FlankEd initiative aims to investigate the physical mechanisms, triggers, and dynamics of volcanic flank sliding. Despite intensive study at Etna, critical questions remain about the relationships between sliding and eruptive processes, the nature of the sliding plane, local stress fields, fluid circulation, subsurface microbial ecosystems’ dynamics, and interactions with regional tectonics. By drilling, we aim to intersect the sliding surface, thereby constraining its depth and kinematics. Core samples, in-situ data and high-resolution instrumentation will enable for mechanical and hydrogeological modeling of flank dynamics. This interdisciplinary approach is essential for developing advanced, multi-risk mitigation strategies relevant to the densely populated Etna region.
