In Memoriam: Professor Rolf Emmermann

The International Continental Scientific Drilling Program (ICDP) is deeply saddened to announce the passing of Professor Rolf Emmermann, Founding Chairman of ICDP, distinguished geoscientist, and one of the principal visionaries of continental scientific drilling.

Rolf Emmermann played a pivotal role in establishing continental scientific drilling as a powerful tool for exploring the Earth. His scientific leadership during the German Continental Deep Drilling Program (KTB) demonstrated the extraordinary potential of deep drilling to address fundamental questions about the structure, evolution, and dynamics of our planet. 

On the national level, Rolf Emmermann played a pivotal role as the founding director of the GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences (Now: GFZ Helmholtz Centre for Geosciences), helping to establish it as one of the world's leading institutions for geoscience research. Internationally, he transformed the vision of a global drilling initiative into a thriving organization: the International Continental Scientific Drilling Program (ICDP). As ICDP's Executive Chairman from 1996 to 2011, he brought together funding agencies and scientific communities from around the world through his vision, determination, and diplomatic skill, establishing an infrastructure that has enabled groundbreaking research for more than three decades through more than 60 completed scientific drilling projects. 

Rolf Emmermann firmly believed that the greatest scientific challenges could only be addressed through international cooperation and multidisciplinary, interdisciplinary research. His commitment to scientific excellence, openness, and collaboration shaped the culture of ICDP from its very beginning. He was a thoughtful mentor, a trusted colleague, and a leader who encouraged young scientists while building lasting friendships throughout the international geoscience community. His enthusiasm for science and his genuine interest in people made him an exceptional ambassador for the Earth sciences.
Rolf Emmermann's legacy lives on in every ICDP project, in the discoveries made possible through continental scientific drilling, and in the vibrant international community he helped create. His influence on the geosciences extends far beyond his own scientific achievements and will continue to inspire future generations.

The ICDP community extends its deepest condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues. We remember him with profound gratitude, admiration, and respect. His vision, leadership, and friendship will remain an enduring part of ICDP's history and future. He will be greatly missed and long remembered.
