ICDP EC and AOG meeting (Sevilla, Spain)
ICDP Executive Committee and Assembly of Governors Panel Meetings 2026 in Seville/Spain
The International Continental Scientific Drilling Program is currently holding its annual Panel Meetings, for the first time in Spain. The ICDP is supporting scientific projects to decipher processes deep in the underground that can be addressed through drilling on land or in lakes. Key science challenges targeted by the ICDP are e.g., understanding the evolution of continents; addressing geohazards such as earthquakes, volcanic eruptions or landslides; closing knowledge gaps in georesources and geoenergy research; and last but not least understanding previous climate evolution towards better mitigating climate change.
A particular funding line together with the international ocean drilling programs is to foster so-called Land2Sea projects involving both drilling on land and in the oceans. The ICDP Executive Director, Marco Bohnhoff explains: "The broad range of different research topics that can be addressed through scientific drilling is immense. ICDP sees increasing numbers of research proposals reflecting the ambition to push the state of the art in the different geoscience topics and to transfer the knowledge gained into solutions for society. It is our aim to fund the most exciting research at world-class sites to ensure world-class science".
