Mutnovsky Scientific Drilling Project
Magma-Hydrothermal Connection
Mutnovsky volcano and Mutnovsky geothermal reservoir in Kamchatka, Russia provide an ideal geometry for exploring the magma-hydrothermal connection by drilling. A 62 MWe power plant taps a productive zone that strikes towards Mutnovsky's active vent with 700°C fumaroles. Geochemical data support the view that the geothermal fluids are derived from the environment of Mutnovsky's hot conduit.
