How ICDP runs

The organizational structure of ICDP is “lean and mean”. It is simple and transparent, and is flexible in dealing with the logistical needs of individual projects yet uncompromising as regards scientific excellence; and it is inexpensive to administer.

The German GeoForschungsZentrum GFZ in Potsdam is acting as the Executive Agency of the ICDP on behalf of the ICDP members. The GFZ was founded in 1992 as one of three new “Big Research Centres” in East Germany. It is a Foundation of Public Law, belongs to the Helmholtz Association of Germany Research Centres and represents the German Research Centre for Geosciences.

The Administrative Executive Director of the GFZ is responsible for the administration of the ICDP money, the control of the expenditures and all judicial business related to the formulation and negotiation of contracts such as the Memorandum of Understanding, Joint Research Ventures and other national or international agreements. He is assisted by the staff of the Administrative Executive Board and the Department "Budget and Finances" within the Administration of the GFZ. Proper expenditure of ICDP money is controlled annually by an external Auditing Company. This Audit Report is presented to the AOG every year who can in this way be informed of the correct use of ICDP money.
