Abstract
We request support to hold an international workshop in Zakopane, in order to discuss main objectives and scientific program for drilling in the Orava area, southern Poland (Orava Deep Drilling Project – ODDP). The scientific backbone for the ODDP will be the recognition of structural relationships at depth in the suture zone between the European continent and Africa/Apullia?-derived terranes in the Western Carpathians, the relationship between magmatic records and geodynamic setting, the possibility of an active asthenosphere uplift and nature of geophysical anomalies, the renewable energy resources and other issues. The depth of the cratonic basement in the suture zone, according to the results of the deep seismic magnetotelluric and magnetic soundings, is below 6-8 km. The European craton is covered by flysch unit overthrust onto the southern part of the platform, the basement depth calculated from the platform bending is 10 km. An enigmatic basement uplift exists despite the general south dip of the European platform under Carpathians that may be caused caused by the geothermal uplift of the astenosphere, replacing delaminated lithosphere or by mantle plumes, or by the basement-involved thrust faults. The boundary between the overriding plate, and the European plate is the Pieniny Klippen Belt, 700 km long, strongly compressed and tectonically complicated suture zone. In this narrow belt there is a wealth of unanswered questions that hamper a better understanding of the Central European Alpine system evolution. Many of these questions could be answered by scientific drilling We will bring together an international group of about 60 participants consisting of scientists, engineers, administrators, and governmental officials to discuss the scientific objectives and logistics of the project. During open discussions the most important and success-promising scientific goals will be selected and a suitable place for the pilot and the main drilling will be decided. Parallel to this application, we are preparing a preliminary proposal ODDP drilling addressed to the ICDP, as well as to our national science foundations and prospecting institutions. The organizing committee will consist of members from Poland, Slovak Rep., Czech Rep. Austria and USA who are preparing ICDP pre-proposal. We believe that planned ODDP will be an element of a more extensive program of scientific drillings in the Alpine system in Europe. We request funds for invited participants to attend the workshop , which will last 5 full days with the mixture of conference and field trips.
Scientific Objectives
  • compare the timing of these sequences with ages predicted from the oxygen isotope proxy for glacioeustasy, to estimate the amplitudes and rates of sea-level changes, and to evaluate sequence stratigraphic models.
