The KTB drill rig is actually the biggest and technically most advanced on-shore drill rig of the world and has been especially constructed together with an active vertical drilling system to meet the requirements of an ultradeep borehole in crystalline rocks. To reduce roundtrip times significantly an automated pipe handling system with a star shaped fingerboard and triple drill pipes with a total length of 40 m have been employed. The drill rig is designed for handling drillstrings with a total length of 12,000 m.
In order to meet environmental requirements and reduce noise all systems at the drill site are powered electrically.
