Mutnovsky Scientific Drilling Project
Description
Mutnovsky volcano and Mutnovsky geothermal reservoir in Kamchatka, Russia provide an ideal geometry for exploring the magma-hydrothermal connection by drilling. A 62 MWe power plant taps a productive zone that strikes towards Mutnovsky's active vent with 700°C fumaroles. Geochemical data support the view that the geothermal fluids are derived from the environment of Mutnovsky's hot conduit. An international workshop will be held to prioritize and sharpen definitions of primary scientific objectives, and frame a scientific drilling proposal. Objectives to be discussed include:
- Identifying magmatic components in fluids proximal to the conduit and their relationship to fluids of the producing system.
- Monitoring physical parameters to assess the hydraulic connectedness of the volcanic and geothermal systems.
- Acquiring and interpreting, in terms of magma evolution, a comprehensive eruption and chemical history of Mutnovsky volcano.
- In-situ measurement of the response of the magma-hydrothermal system to earthquakes and eruptions, including precursory changes.
- Comparing the conduit environment of a short-repose period volcano with that of Unzen, a long-repose period volcano.
- Determining the overall volatile and thermal budget of the volcano by assessing subsurface hydrothermal advection as well as emission to atmosphere
