ICDP Workshop Barberton Greenstone Belt 2010

created by Knut Behrends
Deep scientific drilling through 3.5-billion-year-old continental crust: Barberton Greenstone Belt, South Africa. This ICDP Workshop will be held on April 13-16, 2010 near Badplaas, South Africa. The deadline for applications is February 20, 2010.
There is a growing interest in exploring co-evolution of tectonic processes and exosphere dynamics of the early Earth. Unravelling this connection will require linking surface exposures to subsurface rocks and geophysical data. Following recent successful shallow drilling in the Barberton Greenstone Belt, the time has come to consider deeper penetration (8-10 km), with implications for the origin of oceans, lithosphere recycling, continents and life. A highly promising approach is to drill deep into a paleo-suture zone currently exposed at surface along the margin of this world-class greenstone belt.

A workshop will be held on April 13-16, 2010 near Badplaas, South Africa, 300 km west of Johannesburg and within driving distance of important localities and potential sites for a proposed deep drill site to characterise Earth's crust across the oldest known suture zone. Participants will evaluate data gathered in the area over the last 30 years, discuss a plan for a scientific research strategy, as well as to decide whether additional data are needed to constrain a potential deep drill site. The workshop will also address opportunities of potential benefits relating to developing local educational and technology schemes related to this project.

Members of the international scientific community who are interested in contributing to the workshop are invited to submit an application with their name, institution, contact details and brief summary of their relevant expertise and intended contribution to Maarten de Wit (maarten.dewit@uct.ac.za). The deadline for applications is February 20, 2010. Preference for participation and available travel funds will be given to those from ICDP member countries. The workshop will include about 30 participants from a variety of disciplines. Researchers will be invited on the basis of their research interest related to the goals of the workshop.
