Marco Bohnhoff is Head of GFZ Section 4.2, Geomechanics & Scientific Drilling, and Professor of Experimental and Borehole Seismology in joint appointment with Freie Universität Berlin. He studied Geophysics and received his doctorate in 2000 from the University of Hamburg before he completed his habilitation in 2006 at the Ruhr University Bochum. In 2003 he joined the GFZ as a research assistant. From 2007 to 2009, he was a visiting scholar at the Institute of Geophysics at the University of Stanford, California. From 2018 to 2019 he was Executive Chair of the International Scientific Continental Drilling Program ICDP before he became Executive Director of the program in mid-2019
